Fairisle, Method 2

If you are comfortable using the Fairisle method given in the Instruction Manual, by all means continue using it. However, I find the following methods easier, probably because I began as a hand knitter, and still tend to think in terms of completing just one row at a time, rather than actually working on two at a time, as is done in the manual. The following method is one way to work Fairisle one complete row at a time.

Set the carriage with all four carriage levers in the forward position.

carriage1
Reading from the first row of the chart, carriage on right, bring forward to HP all indicated MC needles. Black squares indicate CC, white squares indicate MC.

chart
Row 1. With MC in carriage, K 1 row. Release carriage from bed and replace on right side without knitting. Only the needles in HP have knitted, the the MC yarn has stranded across in front of the others. However, note that all needles are now back in WP. This takes a little getting used to, since in this case, only the extended, HP needles knit--exactly opposite from what we usually expect of HP needles! This is caused by having the Side Levers (rear pair) in the forward position, rather than their normal backwards position. Now bring forward the indicated CC needles (those shown by black squares on the chart). Thread up with CC and K 1 row. Carriage is now on left, and row 1 is completed.

Row 2. For row 2, begin with carriage on left. Select MC stitches, place MC in carriage and knit 1 row to the right. Release carriage and replace on left side without knitting. Select CC needles. Place CC in carriage and knit 1 row. Carriage is now on right, and row 2 is completed. Repeat this two-step process for every row of the chart.
